Kinetic centrifugal pumps are most commonly typed by their general mechanical configuration. The broadest characteristics, which include most centrifugal pumps, are:
Overhung impeller type
In this group, the impeller/s is mounted on the end of a shaft. This shaft is cantilevered or "overhung" from its bearing supports.
These pumps are either close coupled, where the impeller is mounted directly on the driver shaft; or separately coupled, where the impeller is mounted on a separate pump shaft being then supported by its own bearing.
Impeller between bearing type
In this group, the impeller/s is mounted on a shaft with bearings at both ends. The impeller is mounted "between bearings."
These pumps are then split up in two groups as single stage and multistage configurations.
Regenerative turbine type
A low rate of flow, high head pump that use peripheral or side channel vanes or buckets on a rotating impeller. This then impart energy to the liquid that is being pumped. The liquid travels in a helical pattern. It goes through the impeller vanes and accompanying flow passages. This allows the liquid pressure to increase at a uniform rate through the passages from inlet port to outlet port.
Special variations
In addition to the mechanical configuration, there are some special variations of pumps. These are included in these general types but stand separately:
Sewage pumps that have no clog impellers.
Abrasive pumps. These may be made of hard metals or may have rubber lining.
Heating circulating pumps. These are fractional horsepower units for use in home heating systems.
Canned motor or magnetic drive pumps. These types do not require mechanical seals or packing.
